Description of the event
The spatial installation of hundreds of frottages taken from tombstones in defunct and existing cemeteries of the former Sudetenland was initiated by the writing and typography studio of the University of Applied Arts. For more than two years, students and heads of the studio have been documenting selected cemeteries, especially in the area of the Ore Mountains, Broumovsko and Jabloneck. The purpose of their work was to capture and document the writing used on tombstones, its forms and typology, local specifics, as well as the transformation over time. On the basis of the documentation created in the studio, digital fonts were later created, the basis of which are the collected inscriptions. Their more thorough examination in the future will result in the definition of a more general typology of used font styles.
