The exhibition will present, in the form of a spatial installation, hundreds of frottages taken from tombstones in defunct and existing cemeteries of the former Sudetenland. Students and heads of the UMPRUM writing and typography studio documented selected cemeteries around Jablonec nad Nisou and other places in Bohemia. The purpose of this performative activity was mainly to revive and preserve the memory of individual, mostly unknown persons. Based on the documentation created in the studio, digital fonts were later created, and a more thorough examination of the collected inscriptions should in the future result in a more general typology of font styles used on gravestones. This work will also be part of the installation..
The exhibition is created in cooperation with UMPRUM in Prague.
