Description of the place

The Roman Catholic Deanery Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a sacred building on Horní náměstí (Upper Square) in Jablonec nad Nisou. Its construction began at the end of the 19th century, when the town was growing rapidly and the Baroque Church of St. Anne was no longer sufficient in terms of capacity. It was completed during the economic crisis and consecrated on 24 April 1932. The building was designed by Josef Zasche, a prominent architect of pre-war Czechoslovakia and a native of Jablonec. The church is built of brick in a rectangular shape with three naves. On the south side of the church is a characteristic prismatic tower, over 52 metres high, which is also a dominant feature of the town. Inside the church is a remarkable bronze altar statue of the living Jesus Christ, created by Arnold Hartig. Also interesting is one of the side altars, which reflects the world war in sacred architecture. The renovated organ here is one of the largest in the diocese. Since 1963, the church and the rectory have been protected as cultural monuments.
